This one was difficult for me to write.. so hope I do it justice.

Who was Doris Huneycutt?
I do not remember when I first met Doris, she was just always fully present. A soft spoken strong woman/grandmother with great love for her family, friends, rescue and Pearl Jam. Her passing was not only personal loss for a lot of us but also a tremendous loss for GDRNT.

It is not surprising that two individuals offered to honor her memory with matching funds for North Texas Giving Day. These funds will double the first $2,000 of donations made via NTXGiving to Great Dane Rescue of North Texas. Matching funds will not show in the North Texas Giving Day day total but will be donations made directly to GDRNT. For those who did not have the benefit of knowing Doris and those who loved her………..

For many years Doris was a GDRNT Rock Star. A dedicated volunteer, foster, adopter, supporter and friend. As a volunteer there are few jobs Doris did not do. She handled the most difficult email or voicemail with polite wisdom and dispensed her grandmotherly advise with grace. Even when someone didn’t deserve it and should have received a thump on the head.

A fixture at Meet n Greets with Nigel, Gigi or Brother by her side, they represented GDRNT for years, educating people not only about GDRNT but about responsible pet ownership. Many of the miles on her car were from doing numerous home visits and transports for GDRNT. Doris was known for her very complete home visits, that frequently turned into friendships and dinner dates. Her petite frame did not stop her from transporting and turning the biggest, frightened dane into a love muffin.

I tried to count how many fosters stayed with Doris over the years but there are too many. She never said no to a pup in need and because of her special touch she frequently accepted challenging pups into her home. Doris’s loving heart and patience gave many frightened, special needs pups a second chance so they could find FURever homes.

I think she would be happy to know that we continue in her Honor. Please consider making your North Texas Giving Day day donation to Great Dane Rescue of North Texas. Scheduled giving has started and the big event will be September 20th.
