FORTY NINE PERCENT!!!  According to data compiled by the American Kennel Club Dognapping has risen 49% in the past year. Seriously.   The most common targets are little dogs like Pomeranians, Yorkies, and Maltese, however dognapping numbers are increasing for dogs of all size and breed.  Certainly, some of this can be contributed to people just not wanting to pay for a pup, but more frequently it is for profit.  On line sites make it very easy to “re-home” a pet for a few dollars.  A stolen dog, a sad story and internet ananimity create the perfect ingredients for some dishonest quick cash. Unaltered dogs are often sold for profit breeding.
There are some simple steps you can take to help protect your furkid no matter the size or breed:
Micro Chip! The chip is no bigger than a grain of rice and is inserted just under the skin between the shoulder blades. It is inserted using a needle similar to  that of vaccinations and most dogs don’t even notice. You can get a micro chip from your vet or a Mico chip clinic.
ID PLEASE. Make sure your dog has correct ID tags with the best phone number to reach you.  Your street address may also help should your dog get out close to home.
LOCK YOU GATE!  Many dogs are simply taken via an open gate to the yard. Locks are a simple line of defence in protecting your dog and home.
ATTENTION! Never leave your dog unattended in public. It may be tempting to leave them in front of the coffee shop while you pop in.. but that is making for an easy target.
These simple steps can help build a line of defence to protect your pet from theft and falling into uncaring hands
