I asked one of our foster moms to write about why she fosters….. have a tissue ready!!
“A forgotten birthday present turned out to be one of my best presents ever! For my 34th birthday, my husband somehow forgot or didn’t get around to purchasing a present for me so to make up for it, he offered me the chance to foster a great dane which I had been dying to do for some time. That was 6 years ago and over a dozen fosters I have had the fortune of helping. I happily admit I am addicted to danes and love, love, love them.

People ask me all the time how I can bear to foster when I have to give them up, doesn’t my heart just break? It is simple, no. My heart doesn’t break but sometimes it feels like it might explode. There is something so gratifying and fulfilling about helping these great dogs. They come into your life, keep it interesting, love you, love your family. Watching them get paired with another great family and seeing them hop happily into another family’s car, nuzzling their hands, leaning into them for more petting or sitting on their lap doesn’t feel like they are cheating but like you are reuniting them with their family. How can that feel bad? Sure there are those moments as you drive home that a bit of sadness might pop up and your house feels like something is missing when you first get home, but those feelings are quickly replaced with anticipation of that next foster you will be getting. So you get busy washing the towels, bedding and dishes all the while day dreaming of that next great dane to come through your door…..”
