Meet Sweet Sam!

Those of you of a certain age will remember the show about the Bionic Man (cue music now) Well we now have our own Bionic Dane…….

About a month ago GDRNT got in a very serious call from a small town shelter. The shelter stated that they had a Dane at the shelter who had been hit by a car TWO WEEKS earlier. She was hit approx on Dec 20 and the poor baby spent two weeks unclaimed at the shelter without treatment for her injury. Samantha is about 10 to 12 months old… A BABY!!! The local vet and rescue groups did not have the resources to repair her leg. Thanks to ROCKIN GDRNT volunteers and donors we were in a position to help this sweet girl!

Two of our FABULOUS volunteers made the long drive over a winter weekend to get sweet Sam from this shelter. Like many of the dogs we pick up she was stinky, she was in pain and had more kisses to give away than any other dog would. I swear these animals know when their angels arrive!

The best orthopedic surgeon in Dallas, Dr Turner, along with our devoted Dr Brian Benjamin, repaired and rebuilt this poor gals leg. We really did not have hopes for her leg and assumed it would have to be amputated. Thanks to the awesome work of our vets, their staff and our volunteers Sam has a newly rebuilt leg.

Samantha’s leg is in a traction device with 6 screws and a metal rod internally and an external fiberglass rod. She is in some pain and gets surges of pains but is still the happiest little thing ever. Her leg is draining often ( which her toddler nurse calls her leg juices lol) With the love and care of her foster family she is on the MEND!!!

As of today she is putting weight on her leg and can jump on the couch or into the car without assistance! The exterior rod will be removed in about 6 weeks and as of right now the the interior rod will stay in place. There is NO LIMP with the traction device and there is hope that she will not limp when it comes off! Sam has been spayed but still needs to add a few pounds but we expect her to get a COMPLETE BILL OF HEALTH!!!

Her Foster home reports that Samantha is such a sweetie girl and cannot stand to hear the baby cry and wants to fix him with kisses! Sam has been great with her dane and human sisters and has been a very good patient!
