Back in May 2013 Mother Nature Network posted a story about a crying Johnny Carson. You may think they are a bit behind on the times… but this week it has special meaning. Some sentiments are timeless, not to be eroded with time.

Back in 1981, legendary actor James “Jimmy” Stewart, the star of “It’s a Wonderful Life” and too many other classics to list here, went on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” to share his hobby: poetry. The piece that he read was titled “I’ll Never Forget a Dog Named Beau” about Stewart’s golden retriever.

So why do I dust this one off now? It is cold, damp and windy here in Texas tonight. As I write this Mocha is curled up on the sofa and my two fosters curled up and “tucked in” by one of the kids…. we are all cozy. For more years than she would allow me to admit, Mocha has been my loving sidekick….. and in time my foster will find their FURever homes…. For that I am grateful. I cannot think of those on the street, in neglected homes, or on cold shelter floors… waiting for a rescue, medical care, warm bed or some simple scraps of food.

At first, the poem made Johnny and the audience laugh, but it had a very different effect in the end. Describing it can’t do it justice; it’s something you have to see — and feel — for yourself.

Since 2001 we have had over 1525 danes in GDRNT have relied on your donations of time, money and love… so this week I am eternally grateful for those of you who have and continue to contribute to GDRNT.
