One-Eyed Jack

Abandoned in the backyard of his now deserted home, the dane we affectionately call One-Eyed Jack survived with another canine companion until rescued by the Humane Society of North Texas who immediately called us to release him to our rescue for his rehabilitation. Jack was frightened, combative and confused. He reeked of infection, had green goop dripping out of his empty eye socket, and had knots and abscesses all over his body.

One-Eyed Jack

His former owner called the Humane Society of North Texas when he found out his divorced wife had left the Dane in their backyard and moved out. They had Jack since he was a puppy. Claims he lost his eye in puppyhood due to fireants and that he was 2 1/2 years old. Needless to say, Jack had been neglected for quite some time. He was aged at 5 years by the vets – so either the owner doesn’t know how old his dog is or he’s been so medically neglected that his body and teeth are those of an older dog. Vets also feel he suffered a tramatic injury to his eye and the ants possibly came after that to complete the job. .AbscessThe empty socket now suffered constant infection due to dirt and bacteria trapped within. His ears were green, goopy, and smelly from a nasty infection. We can not even describe the smell. He had a gigantic abscess on his hindend filled with puss from laying on hard concrete and dirty ground.

So what is so special about Jack? Within hours, it was discovered that Jack was an absolute doll – wanting/needing his human companions…loving his foster mom’s children. While his new foster dad was filling up the outside water dishes, Jack walked up to him and “asked for a bath”. He stood there unrestrained while his foster dad gave him a bath. BathHe would walk off to check on his foster mom and then walk right back to his foster dad with the hose to continue his bath. Discovered to be a gentleman indoors, though unsure that he is allowed inside. When he needs to go out to go to the bathroom, he lets his foster family know by standing by the backdoor. Crate trained in a day, he now enjoys the comforts and security of the crate. He barks to let his fosters know he needs to go outside. Patiently he waits for his turn for his pats, rubs, and kisses from his foster mom when all the dogs are out together. He follows her everywhere she goes, keeping his eye on her to make sure she is still there and safe. If you have been watching our website for a long time, then you will understand when we say One-Eyed Jack has the same type of spirit that Sammy had.

Jack needs your help. He has had his missing eye surgically cleaned and stitched closed to prevent further infections. One-Eyed JackHis abscess was drained while he was under anesthesia. His ears are being medicated to stop the infection. His additional medical costs have been covered by generous public donations. THANKS TO ALL WHO DONATED!!!!!
