Shelby$1000 GOAL REACHED!!!! THANKS TO ALL WHO DONATED! Shelby is a sweet & very young girl in need of a radical mastectomy due to numerous marble & golf ball size tumors.

She has been bred twice by thoughtless backyard breeders (she is only 13 months old – responsible breeders wait until the dog is at least 2 years old). To do this, she needs an estimated $1000 by September 30th. Can you help Shelby to live a long and pain free life? (click to see update from her Foster Mom)

Please mail donations to GDRNT, PO BOX 40425, Fort Worth, TX 76140-0425. You can also make a donation using a credit card via PayPal. Shelby thanks you!

Update from Foster Mom (9/4/03):
“I picked Shelby up from the vet yesterday and boy, was she excited to be
going home! She slept the whole way in the car. They did the right side of
her first, as that is the one that had the largest tumor. The incision runs
the entire length of her torso and is still draining, so it looks like
something out of Frankenstein. She settled down on her bed (with lots of old
blankets on it, so the blood drainage doesn’t get everywhere) and slept most
of the night. Her little dog friend Owen doesn’t know what is going on. She
was thrilled to see Shelby, but Shelby won’t play with her, as she just
doesn’t feel good. She is on pain medicine and the vet said she will need to
be on it awhile, as there is a lot of bruising. It breaks my heart she has
to go through all of this again in 4 weeks and get the other side done. I
will take some pics of her incision and her recovery and hopefully get them
posted on the web. She is such a good girl though, she has only whimpered in
pain a few times. I have been calling her Shelby Lynn, after Julia Robert’s
character in Steel Magnolias, as she is being such a strong little girl.
Please send it your donations today to help pay her vet bill.
Thank you!”

Update (9/21/03):
“It has been over 2 weeks since Shelby’s surgery and she is doing well. She
was transferred to another foster home where she is recovering. Her incision
was oozing and draining and I just couldn’t keep the sterile dressing on her
and wasn’t home enough to give Shelby the kind of attention she deserved, so
she got moved to a very special foster home with foster mom Allie and foster
dad Dave and they are taking great care of her. Allie was foster mom to
Amanda (starved and thrown out of truck), Gary (gunshot dog), and many other
Danes with medical issues and she can handle just about anything, since her
paying job is as a nurse! I got woozy looking at the blood and don’t deal
with medical traumas too well, so while I miss her terribly, I know she is
better off with Allie and Dave!
Allie said she has taken out her stitches and it is looking pretty good. She
will be going to the vet to get it looked at and get the surgery for the
other side scheduled. She has bonded well to Allie and follows her
everywhere. Shelby is such a lover, I knew she would bond quickly to her new
foster mom! Allie said she is feeling well enough to play with some of the
other puppies (and boy does she like to play!). She certainly won’t feel
like it in a few weeks though, as she will have to be kept crated and quiet
for 2 weeks after the next surgery as well.
We are a little over half-way there on paying for her surgery, but really
need to get to the 100% mark by the end of the month. Shelby’s life was
saved by GDRNT when we pulled her from a kill shelter, but now she is
relying on you to help save her life again…please donate today!”

Update (9/27/03): Shelby is scheduled for the 2nd part of her surgery on October 7th.
