Dane Rescue Fostering Frequently Asked Questions

Best home flooring for BIG dogs.

Does anyone know whether a hard wood floor, mahogany, or tile/marble is best for a home flooring with a great dane. I'm concerned with her scratching the hardwoods if I get that. Thanks!

Foster Parents I need some feedback...

I have recently been asked to take in a 2 yr old unaltered Dane!! I agreed, but later on found out that this Dane has never been an indoor/outdoor dog, just and OUTDOOR dog. I have potty trained my puppies since I brought them home! Am I in for a major headache? Is there any tips anyone could give me in making things go smooth? I have a 3 month old female Dane and a 15 month old Male Dane that I have had from puppies. I plan on getting him fixed fast, but I'm really not sure what to expect and I want to be prepared before we bring him home. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

What is their story? I haven't been to the boards for a while and just looked at the danes avail. page.

Wanna help GDRNT?

For a while there we had to turn away dogs because of a lack of space, now we have more foster homes but our funds are lacking.

So, this is a friendly reminder of how you can help GDRNT without completely emptying your pockets!

GoodSearch

You can raise money for Great Dane Rescue of North Texas just by searching the Internet at GoodSearch.com.

You use GoodSearch.com like any other search engine - the site is powered by Yahoo! - but each time you do, money is generated for us.

Considering Fostering?

If you've been considering becoming a foster home, now is the time. Foster home training program scheduled for Saturday, September 20th. Submit your application (just write "FOSTER" across the top of the first page, no need to pay the processing fee for fostering) ASAP so it can be processed before next weekends training!!
Wondering if you're up for it? Post your questions here and let our foster parents tell it like it is. Our fosters are our most valuable resource.

What does it take?

What does it take to be a foster? I know, lots of hard work and patience! But what else is there? Once we have a house, I think that fostering is something we would love to do in order to help out. We have been twice blessed and feel that in time, it is the least we could do.

First Aid Kits

A while back a few of us who foster were wondering what we should put in a first aide kit for Danes. I have pulled the e-mails an put the results here. This is Lea van Vleets post, the one that would be the largest kit :o)

  • Your veterinarian's phone number (regular and emergency)
  • Copy of your dogs health record and medications
  • Gloves
  • Rectal Thermometer
o This can be glass or the new electronic kind. The electronic ones beep
when they are finished registering a temperature. They do need a battery,

Rescue Missions

All,

Just for the record, if you are ever honored with a request from Tammy/Ronda to rescue a dog, you may be wondering what might be needed for the trip to the kill shelter. I have a list of suggestions, as I have done a few of them. If you have another to add to the list, please do so.

1. Pinch collar and leash.
2. Capstar pills, to kill fleas and ticks within a 1/2 hour. You don’t want them in the car for the trip to the vet’s office…..
3. Plastic sheet/tarp/comforter for your vehicle.
