Please sign a petition encouraging the Dallas City Council to approve the Animal Shelter Commission's proposed mandatory spay/neuter - breeder registration ordinance and help stop the killing of 27,000 dogs and cats in the city shelter each year.

80% of the puppies and kittens from each litter born will end up in a shelter one day and, unfortunately, most of them do not find homes.

As part of a rescue group that sees hundreds of beautiful dogs dumped every year because of irresponsible breeding, I think that it is of the utmost importance that all dogs be spayed/neutered. This will also help prevent dog attacks on people and other animals from unneutered aggressive males. Pet population has gotten so far out of control, we must do something to stop our shelters from being overrun with unwanted animals. Responsible breeders do not have a problem with paying for a license. Only those in it for the money have the big problem with it. Having a dog or cat for a pet is a responsibility, not a right. It is cruel and heartless to allow animals to breed and then have their litters dropped off at shelters or left to wander the streets until they're picked up or die. Far too many animal lives are destroyed each year due to overpopulation. Nina Johnstone

This is absolutely necessary to cut down on the huge animal overpopulation problem. This costs Dallas and surrounding areas so much money to help control, but preventing it in the first place will help cut down on costs and unnecessary loss of life. The only people who have a problem with this ordinance are people who breed dogs purely for profit with no concern for the consequences of their actions. Responsible, reputable breeders should WELCOME this ordinance as it should help eliminate competition from irresponsible breeders diluting and polluting their respective breeds through unethical breeding practices. Reputable breeders breed out of a love of the breed and a desire to improve the breed, not for profit and any measure that helps put bad backyard breeders out of business should be praised and fought for. As an animal health worker and someone who is very active in animal rescue, I think this action should become law everywhere. I'm a foster parent for a local rescue group and firmly believe that ALL counties in Texas should have a mandatory spay/neuter - breeder registration ordinance. There are so many stray dogs and cats that have been dumped, abused, etc. Most of these animals suffer because people want the money they get from breeding these animals without a care as to where they end up or what type of environment they are forced to live in or die in. Please please pass this ordinance. I have picked up so many puppies and strays and either taken them to the Humane Society or tried to rehome them in order to keep them from getting killed by a car or by another aggressive LOOSE dog in my neighborhood. I am so pleased to see some of the small changes that are being made to make pet owners be more responsible for their pets. Please keep up the good work and pass this ordinance. Heather Tuthill
