Older Dane with Leash trouble

My family and I recently adopted a 3 1/2 year old Great Dane from an animal shelter. He has been a wonderful addition, great with our other dog, our cat, and our kids! We've had him for about 6 months now. The only problem is taking him for walks. Initially he was DRAGGING me around the block. I purchased a gentle leader and he is now walkable. He doesn't drag me around or even pull (unless he sees a small dog that he gets excited about). The problem is he wants to walk directly in front of me. Even on a 6' leash this is a problem because I am tall and take long strides. I have tried to get him to walk next to me but it is such a physical effort we don't usually get very far before I either give up and let him lead or take him home. Does anyone have any suggestions? I just want him to walk next to me instead of in front. He is still wearing the gentle leader and seems to have gotten used to it, greatly helping with the pulling.
