Shammy - Heart Murmur

So, Shammy was supposed to get his teeth cleaned and a growth removed from his leg last Thursday. They were doing the pre-surgery bloodwork and check and discovered a heart murmur and his heart rate was really fast so they didn't do the anesthesia. So, just to be safe, I authorized a heart sonogram for yesterday. The vet said is was good news...he just has a heart murmur (going from memory here, as I was driving) and it's from left chamber to lungs, but there is no sign of the thinning of the heart walls which is what they have to look for in Danes. That being said, she said he was cleared for anethesia and they would just have to monitor him extra closely. But she said it should be done sooner then later. She also said it was my call, since neither was a life threatening need. His teeth are okay, and the growth on his leg is more then likely just a fatty tumor. Vet's concern is that if I don't do the surgery now and down the road his teeth get worse or the growth on his leg grows larger, that he may not be eligible to HAVE the surgery. She said it's up to me. I am really torn. I do everything I can for my babies, but am scared if I agree to put him under and something goes wrong, I would never be able to forgive myself. On the other hand, if I don't do it and he DOES need it down the road, then I will regret not doing it now.
Ugh. Anyone else faced with this?
Shammy is estimated 6 years old, though he acts older most the time. Lazy lazy boy!

Thanks,

Sara (Bubba Chad's and Shammy's mom)
