Chew Toys

I don't personally give rawhide to Daisy, but she would love it if I did. I don't like the chemicals, smell, or possible danger involved. Not to mention a gooey rawhide is just gross. BUT she loves her Kong and Nylabones. The only trouble with the Nylabones is she always loses them out the gap at the bottom of the crate. I buy them at dog.com for very cheap (even the Souper size), and you can link through Benevolink to give GDRNT a percentage! Everyone wins with that- Daisy gets something to chew on, I have not lost anything in our house to chewing throughout her puppy hood AND the rescue gets a donation. Plus, you don't have to worry about the toys coming in contact with every dog at PetSmart (yuck!) and they come right to your door! Works out great for all of us.

No raw hide

I have been told not to give raw hide to my dogs. Of course, I do not remember who told me ....whoever it was said they could choke on it, and they do not digest it properly. That being said, I gave my dogs raw hides for years before I got Gandalf and changed. Now, I give my guys The Original Jumbo. It is made in USA and you can buy it at several pet stores. They are pretty expensive, but they last a long time.

nope

we stopped giving our dogs rawhides after seeing cowgirl choke on a big piece she bit off. that was many years ago.
now we're even more careful about treats because if they are not made in the us, there's a chance they can contain poisons, lead, etc.
we now give reilly only natural treats.

They do make the best

They do make the best pacifiers, but I agree that they can be dangerous. Shaeba literally swallowed one whole and then puked it up whole later. We have not given them to any of the dogs since.

With a multi-dog household there seems to be peer pressure and I have noticed that some of my guys will swallow things whole in a hurry to keep from letting another dog get bit. Our IG is the worst of all. I have been amazed at the things he has swallowed! Its scary!

I think Cassie said

I think Cassie said something one time about rawhides. Something like the ones made here in the states are preserved with formaldehyde or something and that makes it so that they don't digest. If you get rawhides that aren't preserved, they will digest if the dog swallows them and it's not a problem. Maybe someone else can add to that. I don't have time to look it up for myself right now.

HA! I know EXACTLY what you're talking about Krissybear! My IGs are little scavengers - which is weird since the breed was the dog of choice for royalty back in the day. You'd think they'd have some sort of built-in mechanism to tell them to chill out because the royal chef will prepare a seven course meal that will be served on velvet pillows by three fair maidens. Instead, my IGs like to walk around, begging for food from anyone bigger than them - and that includes begging for food from my dane, Fran - like they're some poor orphan children from a Charles Dickens novel. I swear I saw a tiny head disappear under Fran's lip flap the other day - no doubt looking for something Frannie hadn't finished chewing. Ugh.

As for rawhides - they scare me. We haven't had any in our house for a long time.

Rawhide

I'm ok with rawhide if it is made in America. That stuff made in China and Brazil is preserved with who-knows-what. If it is just pure rawhide it should be digestable even if they eat a big chunk (as long as they don't choke on it.) You can find american rawhide at Target (Petsmart doesn't have much for some reason)
But like any treat they need to be watched at least the first few times to make sure they don't choke themselves or swallow it whole.
