Masticatory Muscle Myositis

Last week, I had a very interesting conversation with a lady whose Dane was diagnosed with MMM. Although hopefully none of us will ever have to see or deal with this disease, it is normally a disease of large dogs where the immune system attacks the body's own chewing muscles, so thought it might be of interest here. She became alarmed when her Dane couldn't open her mouth without pain, and sounded like a small puppy when she barked. She also had other symptoms of face and forehead swelling (which will eventually atrophy or shrink), drooling, and bulging eyes. Her vet is treating the dog with corticosteriods. It seems a cure is possible, or the disease can become chronic. I know we will all wish for the best possible outcome for this beloved Dane.
