Bailey won't stop itching...

...and his skin looks irritated:( When we brought him home he was a mess and infested with fleas so we thought his redness and irritation was due to fleas. The vet did a skin scraping and it was negative at his first appt. Now, it is a month and with advantix he has no fleas but still looks irritated and itches himself (not all the time but enough... he seems uncomfortable). I know part of the problem was my fault becuase I bathed them to frequently the first couple of weeks (bro Barnum even got flaky/ dried out). I'm switching their diet from Eukanuba (thank you for setting me straight) to Canidae and I choose that diet specailly because it claims to be good for coat/ skin issues. Should I request another skin scraping?
Both dogs also have eye snot? It's clear but goopy..yuk and their coat in coarse and oily. I wish I stared a better diet sooner (vet recommended Eukanuba large puppy). Anything else I should be doing? Both pups have an appoint at the vet again this Thursday. It's not all bad with their health...they are growing, ACTIVE pups but I wish they hurry up and recover from their early days already!!!

looks familiar

Mo will break out in rash that looks very very similar if not the same... she has a white belly so it is very noticable.... check with your vet but her turned out to be some allergic thing and cleared up pretty quick after the right antihistimine....

also you could have fleas in your yard or grass.... you can spary with an organic garlic spray or we use Cedar O... (doesn't make the yard smell like pizza) or you can have it sprayed by a bug company.....

good luck

Thank you...

...I've never heard of Cedar-O but I'll get it because you say it is organic and i'll try anything to get Bailey comfy in his skin. Good advice!

Caaloways?

I think I got it at calloways nursery.. but I think I have seen it at Lowes... it def doesn't work as well as that Cutter Yard spay but it is ok... when it gets wicked bad I will hit it with the Cutter Yard Spray and just keep everyone in the house..... I have also used an organic yard/pest guy with only mixed results.... if you have a good nursery near you I would go ask what they have in their organic natural section... but just know you might need to go toxic....

last year we did treat with Cedar O but did hit the yard about 3 times with the toxic stuff because the fleas and fire ants were winning

yep..we do the same because fire ants..

...we always chose organic products first but we have lost the battle with fire ants before too... besides our pup we have a three year and our backyard is choice 'family room' for everyone so we too use the heavy hitters when all else fails. My terrior,Charlie, was HIGHLY allergic to fleas when she first came home and stayed that way for YEARS. She'd have flea protection BUT just having a flea contact her would send her into a spiral of red/rashy skin that she would chew, scratch ...she'd be miserable. Now that she is older, ironically, she seems better adapted. I have a (uneducated) hunch this is what is happening with Bailey and it will take more than just treating him for fleas. I used to be STRONGLY against brood spectrum products until I had a dog roll into an ant pile (in my organicly treated yard) and he got hundreds of ant bites all over his head, ear, nose ...it was ER a trip, horrible and sad amounts of pussy wounds. Now, I kill ants...whatever it takes! Bailey needs relief and your advice gives me direction that one way or the other will either lead to the solution or rule out what it is not. Thank you so much!

Systematic Yeast Infection

Hey there,

Well, Mac came home with the same thing and then it flared up again when it started to get hotter. After reading A LOT and not getting much out of the vet (Benadryl), I concluded that he probably has a systematic yeast infection. I guess it's common in dogs that were on a bad diet. Anyway, I went to greatdanelady.com and read about it there. Then I switched his food from Canidae to Eagle Pack Holistic (recommended for yeast infections) and bought all the probiotics and stuff to get rid of the yeast infection. Sure enough, he's been taking his meds (holistic) for 2 weeks and his rashes are gone, he's stopped scratching like crazy, and his hair is growing back. He also had a very dry coat that was overshedding. I also put Hank and Ninja on the maintenance plan for adults recommended by greatdanelady.com and they look and act like they feel better. They are still on Canidae and I am tempted to switch them, but won't yet. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at Meg8556 [at] aol [dot] com.
Hope this helps!

Meg, Carter, Ninja, Hank, and Mac

I tried to email...

...but it keeps coming back to me, I think my gmail is down. Anyway, I did order 'nymes' which I think should come in the mail today and saw on the same site I ordered them information about yeast problems but I really didn't read much about it (I will now). I really appreciate any info you can give me. I saw so many products on the site it was overwhelming. By the way, when I ordered the nymes I was asked who referred me and anwered ....Meg from Texas...mommy to 'Ninjia' because you recommended it to me back with my kibble questions. Anyway, any guidance you can give me I'd REALLY appreciate! my email is suzannehigbee [at] gmail [dot] com

So the boys saw the vet again...

...the vet did skin scrapings of both (which were neg) and her conclusion was that their bad bacteria that naturally lives on their skin became out of balance with the good ones. I was aware Bailey had an issue but she saw evidence that Barnum had the beginning of the same issue. They will be bathed with a special shampoo twice a week, take an antibiotic and an antihistamine. I also just chaged their diet to Canidae Lamb and Rice and started giving nzymes supplements and treated my yard for fleas including continued use of Advantage. Inspite of it everything, they gained 15 lbs in three weeks and she is pleased with their overall health. She said they are both starting to lose their puppy teeth and to expect massive chewing! I was also given a preventative ear wash to use twice a month because she says those big ole floppy ears need it. They get their last series of shots next month and will be fixed at the same time:) Thank you all for your guidance...i really appreciate it:)
