What Is Kennel Cough And How Can You Prevent It?

Kennel cough is a very common canine disease. Many dog owners know the term but don't know much about the disease.

Kennel cough is a common term that refers to a contagious, airborne disease of dogs that is caused by different viruses and bacteria. It is easily spread from dog to dog through the air. Kennel cough is especially common in high-density areas where dogs are in close quarters and may be stressed (for instance, at the groomer's, in a kennel or at an animal shelter). The environment is similar to kindergarten, where kids are together in close proximity within the same area. If you know any parents of young kids, you know that in school, a cold virus or bug is commonly spread from one child to another to another.

Most kennels, groomers, and training classes require dogs to have the kennel cough vaccine. The other name for this vaccine is "Bordetella" - you may have heard that term.

Kennel cough is generally not a life-threatening disease but it can be very annoying. Many dogs end up going to the veterinarian or emergency clinic when they keep coughing or when they stop eating. Most dogs are treated with antibiotics to minimize or treat any bacterial component.
Can you prevent kennel cough? Yes you can. If your dog goes to areas that are frequented by other dogs - boarding, grooming, dog parks, etc. - it is smart to have your dog vaccinated.
