About 10 days ago Lucy showed up with an infection in her foot. Nothing out of the ordinary for her - off to the vet, on Primor antibiotics, no big deal. Nothing is no big deal for Lucy.
So Thursday night we noticed that she was bleeding from the side of her snout like she had scraped the skin off of it, but then we noticed that she also had several other spots like that around her mouth. When she laid down to look at it, we noticed that she was covered in what looked like small hemorrages all over her body! so i called Dr. Krug on Friday morning and they said to bring her in at 4. So Claire and i took her in and by then she was lethargic and not acting herself and the hemorrages were worse. And we had found a small lump in between her shoulder blades. He originally thought the spots were reaction to the Primor, but when he looked at them he thought something more serious, did blood tests, and we were to come back in the morning and see what we should do.
so home we went, but by 5:45 (an hour later), she was covered in bumps which actually the hemorrages were hematomas and collecting blood and she was really lethargic. we were able to get ahold of someone to get the back line, get Krug to answer and he told us to bring her back right away.
Long story short...IV prednisone, subQ prednisone. Gave us his home number. back home we came, only to find the IV site had swelled to the size of a tennis ball, called him at home, said it would go down, that he now knew she has a clotting problem. watch her gums tonight and if she needed to go to the ER then go because they would have to do a blood transfusion.
she did ok last night, back to him this morning for more iv steroids and antibiotics. blood test showed that her platelet count was down from 200,000 to 5,000 the night before, but had come up over night to 20,000!!
we still don't know yet what's causing it, but should have the full blood work back on monday and begin to treat the problem. for now, we're on clavamox and prednisone and keep an eye on her! she's drinking gallons of water and peeing every thirty minutes.
we almost lost the baby last night and aren't out of the woods yet. out of all the medical things we've gone through with her, this was the worst!! we thought she was going to die last night and if Dr. Krug hadn't once again saved her by staying late and seeing her, i'm sure we would have not made it in time to the ER.
thanks for all your thoughts and prayers for the baby!
