Mabye...

OK i want to know(from peaple who have Danes) how a rescue would fit in with my five kid family (kid ages:13,11,8,7,4)
It sorta seems like a dum questian but i dont own a Dane so....? and is it really that bad? the whole uhhh, poop thing?

Kids and Danes

The great thing about going through a reputable rescue group, like GDRNT, is that you'll know the dog has been evaluated in a variety of situations. We test our dogs for food aggression, high prey drive (meaning: does the dog think cats make good squeak toys), they're evaluated with toddlers, kids, men wearing baseball caps...well, you get the picture. We really want to know if the dog has any issues.

There are some Danes that are not toddler or small child 'safe' - this is almost always the young, adolescent danes in the the throws of what we lovingly refer to as "the devil dog phase". From about 6 mos to about 2 years danes tend to be awful - they are GIANT 100lb+ puppies who don't know how big they are. They jump, they chew, and they romp like there is no tomorrow (at about the 2 year mark, there's a switch that flips and they turn into those lovely, laid-back couch potatoes we all love). But the devil dog phase can be hard on little kids - as the get knocked over and whacked in the face by an out-of-control dane tail.

The poop - well, as long as it's picked up regularly, it's not that big of a deal.

Kids

You just have to make sure you the dane you get is good with children. Our son is 14 and our house is the one everyone comes to on Friday nights. Gandalf can be found laying in the group of 8 teenagers alseep. The only "problem" we have is when new kids come over, they are afraid of Gandalf, which of course is a hoot. He is such a gentle giant, but he has a great bark. You have to make sure your dane is trained, children or not.

kids no issue

for most danes. if you already have a house with lots of activity, you might not even notice a dane unless he/she was leaning on you or standing on your feet ( they love to do both).
if given the proper, healthy food, (which they really should have because of their size), the size and amount of their poop isn't all that much of an issue. it is something that should be taken care of every couple of days though, especially if there are kids playing around outside, for obvious health reasons.
there are lots of other things you'll need to know about owning a giant dog so do some research and don't be afraid to ask questions here.

Perfectly

Everyone knows that I am a sucker for Danes and kids.... They make an amazing addition to any family! We have two kids and two Danes and they interact wonderfully together. Having a Dane in your house teaches kids a very valuable lesson in life -- responsibility! They can help with the feedings, walks, picking up the poop and best of all, the unconditional love that these gentle guys have to give. It is a win win situation as you teach your kids responsibility & respect in so many ways and most of the time they don't even know it!
