Was just out on my morning walk with Ty and Tera and thinking about this.....
It has been a hot summer. Really hot. Warmer weather brings dog owners a wide variety of outdoor activities to share with their beloved pets. With so many parks, hiking trails, and road trips out there, who could resist a little outdoor fun? I see dogs constantly running on the beach, playing in parks and out enjoying the warm weather with their owners.
When outdoors or traveling with your dog, it is crucial to make sure your dog is properly hydrated. Increased activity levels combined with higher temperatures make it particularly important for your dog to have access to fresh, clean water.
Water is the substrate in which all the chemicals of the body are dissolved, all cells are bathed, and all cell contents are suspended. It is also the essential vehicle of the circulatory system. Nothing in the body goes anywhere without water. That's why water is so critical. As little as a 10-15% reduction in total body water can result in death.
When you're on the go, your dog's water supply needs to go with you. This can be especially difficult if you're out on a hike or away from running water.
The hotter weather becomes, the more water your dog will lose through panting and evaporation. You can counteract this dangerous effect by frequently offering cold, clean water to your dog whenever you are outdoors or when you travel.
