Hello!
I am happy to report that Chief now jumps into my SUV all on his own!! AND, we went to Red Bud Isle today and submerged our feet in the water! We'll be swimming before you know it! Oh, and we are making TONS of new friends!!!! We are still a little shy around some male humans and animals, but we are learning to trust more and more every day! We spent the afternoon playing with others without a leash! Wow! The progress we've made in just 2 weeks!!!
I am going to look into this teeth cleaning business. Do all vets charge $200-300+ for a teeth cleaning? Is there any alternative to the vet cleaning that I could do myself that would work? Any spectacular type of dog toothpaste I should be aware of? Thanks for the advice!
Also, we are still learning to play with toys. Susan, thanks for your tip on the stuffed animals. He liked this stuffed bunny I had over here, but I didn't think to remove the eyes until I read your post! I checked what remains of the bunny, and the eyes are nowhere to be found. Will he be okay if he swallowed them? He hasn't seemed to have any issues..(other than the poor eye :( ) . I'll make sure to remove them from now on!
I have been cautious when it comes to choosing toys for him. After hearing the story of the tennis ball, I worry that he will tear up and swallow anything. So far he has shown little interest in the large rope toys and extra large tennis balls. He does like to take large bites off of my lovely plants though, but we're continuing to learn which toys belong to him and which ones do not.
Thanks for the advice! I love this supportive community of dog lovers!

Teeth
As far as teeth cleaning, yes it is a little pricey, mainly because they need to be sedated and these big guys need more anesthetic than smaller dogs. A teeth cleaning for dogs is the same thing that your dentist does when cleaning your teeth, only no dog in the world, no matter how well he is trained, is going to lie on a dental table with his mouth open while we scrape and polish his teeth for 20 to 30 minutes or longer and sometimes teeth need to be extracted. It's uncomfortable and usually by the time we see them, they already have lots of hard stuck on tartar, infection and inflammation in the mouth so it HURTS! You want them to be asleep for it.
Dental health is very important so if the teeth need to be cleaned (basically if your dog has bad breath, not just doggy breath, but breath that is pretty rank, tartar which just looks like brown stuff on the teeth that you can't scrape off with a fingernail, gums that are red and inflammed at the gum line or receding back so more of the tooth is exposed... ) you should have it done.
Talk to your vet about their anesthetic protocol and let him know you are worried about your dog because he is a Dane and discuss specific problems that might occur. If they pretty much use the same protocol for all dogs, maybe go somewhere else or talk to him about options to reduce his risk during the procedure. We give Guinness just a half dose of preanesthetic meds and then just use a very safe gas anesthetic and he does great. I have already had to fully sedate him twice to clean his teeth even though I brush his teeth and he has done fine and recovered quickly for each one.
After his teeth are cleaned, or if they don't need to be cleaned, yet, brushing his teeth is the absolute best thing you can do to reduce plaque (that's the soft film that bacteria leave behind on the teeth that turns into tartar. You can scrape that off with a fingernail.) and tartar buildup. You can also combine that with oral rinses (like mouthwash for dogs) that cut down on the bacteria in the mouth, dental treats with enzymes like CET Chews or others, and other chewy toys. Be careful with large, hard bones. They can fracture teeth and that is very painful. If you brush his teeth (don't worry, it's not as hard as it sounds especially for these big dogs, it's easier to get in their mouths) you need to do it AT LEAST 3 times a week, though every day is best. Plaque builds up very quickly so you have to get it off as quickly as possible. Use a toothpaste made especially for dogs, they even come in yummy flavors, although Guinness likes the mint kind. Using lots of preventive measures can help reduce the number of times your dog has to be sedated for teeth cleanings.
Ok, I know that's really super long, but I'm done now!

Toys and teeth
My sister got Gandalf a bone shaped stuffed toy as a welcome home gift. It looks like a huge fuzzy bone. He loved it. It did go to toy heaven last week due to old age......Gandalf has several stuffed toys, but that one he liked best. It did not have eyes to worry about. About the teeth, I give my guys beef bones from the butcher. I do not like for them to go under at the vets, so I put it off as long as possible. Yes, it ts several hundred dollars to get the teeth cleaned.
Luna has had several plush
Luna has had several plush toys, but she loves the big version of the "BoBo" on the Petsmart commercial. You know, that long tube-shaped animal? Those things aren't cheap and the material is thin. I pitched a few that she ripped open. But I have tried to get this last one to last longer by covering the ripped end with a tube sock and tying a rubber band tight around the top of the sock (middle of the toy). It's been like this for about 3 weeks, so it seems to have worked.
These things are like her security blanket.
LOL
Bentley can be anyones "BoBo" HEHEHE Which dane first???
Note: Bentley is devil dog yorkie that tortures Katie daily....
Teeth
I know Lucy's mom brushes her kiddos teeth daily and they LOVE it. I think it's meat flavored or something. Unless he is showing plaque on his teeth (usually shows up on the big canine teeth first) you don't need a teeth cleaning. Your vet will tell you when it's needed. In the meantime, brushing his teeth would be a good idea. I also do treat my boys to Greenies (jumbo sized) now and then. They are expensive, but really do help with the tartar build-up!
Sounds like you are quite a pair! I have never tried to take the boys swimming, not sure how they would react, but I have a feeling Bubba would sink! Bless his heart! I think all of us have stuffed toy "carcasses" around out house. I do throw them in the washer now and then. They get so nasty, as Shammy likes to suck on his for hours. Rope toys are fun as well.
Keep us posted, as we love hearing folks experience the joy of having a Dane for the first time! Do you feel like a rockstar when you go out with him? I think that was the biggest thing I noticed...if I took a Dane with me somewhere, I needed to double the time allotted, as I would get stopped by people that wanted to ask questions and talk about every 5 feet it seemed like! You definitely can't be a wallflower with a Dane by your side!
Congrats again!

Chief
I honestly do not remember if I checked his teeth out when he was here or not.
I really think that if he is 2 yrs old, that would be a miracle. I always thought he played and acted like he was 18 months old. the eye should pass with out a problem. Just make sure to remove them from now on. I would hate to see him get a toy with a big eye and have it do any damage as it passes. Anyways, I can not imagine his teeth being to the point that they need cleaning. Did the vet suggest it? if so ask him when his dental month is. Alot of vets pick a slow month out of the year and offer discounts on teeth cleaning to help boost their business. Before you do that, I would try to do regular cleanings yourself. Chief may actually like them! I am all about saving $250.00 if I can! There is a good video here that shows you how to gradually get your dog used to brushing:
