First Aid Kits

A while back a few of us who foster were wondering what we should put in a first aide kit for Danes. I have pulled the e-mails an put the results here. This is Lea van Vleets post, the one that would be the largest kit :o)

  • Your veterinarian's phone number (regular and emergency)
  • Copy of your dogs health record and medications
  • Gloves
  • Rectal Thermometer
    o This can be glass or the new electronic kind. The electronic ones beep
    when they are finished registering a temperature. They do need a battery,
    which will need replacing, and they are more expensive than the glass
    ones.
    o Normal canine temperature 100.5 to 102.5 deg. F
    · White petroleum jelly (such as Vaseline)
    o Used to lubricate thermometer

  • Gauze
    o 4 X 4 inch square
    o roll 1 - 2 inch wide

  • Vet rap
  • Stockingette (to protect bandage on leg or foot)
  • Adhesive Tape
    o Non-stick tape (Dermicel or another brand of paper tape
    o Water proof tape

  • Scissors
    o Blunt tipped (use to cut hair away from wounds)
    o Bandage scissors

  • Cotton swabs
  • Cotton Balls
  • Splints (can use paint stirring sticks)
  • Instant hot and cold compresses
  • Rubber bulb ear syringe (used to flush eyes, ears, wounds)
  • Forceps and or tweezers
  • Hemostats
  • Zip lock bags
  • Large syringe without needle (for giving oral medication)
  • Muzzle (do not use if vomiting)
  • Razor blade (for snake bites)
  • Alcohol swabs (for sterilizing instruments or small areas of skin)
  • Stretcher (blanket, floor mat, large towel)
  • Quick Stop
  • Hydrocortisone spray
  • Contact lens solution (to rinse eyes or clean wounds)
  • Green Soap (a mild antibacterial soap for cleaning skin and wounds)
  • Antibiotic ointment (for non puncture type wounds)
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Peroxide
    o Can be used to induce vomiting on animals who have ingested a non-
    caustic poison
    o 10ml every 15 minutes

  • Milk of Magnesia or Activated Charcoal (to absorb poison)
  • Numbers for the Animal Poison Hotline and Poison Control for Pets
    o 1-800-548-2423
    o 1-900-680-0000

  • Buffered Aspirin
    o 5mg per pound every 12 hours for pain relief ; antiflammatory (Maximum
    dosage - one 325mg tablet per 33 lbs (max 2) every 12 hours - for small
    dogs you might want to use "Half Prin" which is an enteric coated aspirin
    with only 81mg) Note - Acetaminophen is poisonous to most animals.

  • Pepto Bismol
    o 1 tsp. Per 5 pounds every 6 hours for relief of vomiting, stomach gas or
    diarrhea.

  • Di Gel Liquid
    o Up to 4 tbs. every 8 hours for antacid and anti - gas

  • Kaopectate
    o 1ml per pound every 2 hours for diarrhea

  • Mineral Oil
    o Up to 4 tbs. Daily to eliminate constipation

  • Imodium AD 2 mg
    o 1 caplet per 30 lbs every 8 hours to relieve diarrhea

  • Benadryl
    o Up to 2 mg per pound every 8 hours to treat allergies, itching, etc. Can
    also be used as a tranquilizer.
